Last night I went and saw Love Never Dies, the "sequel" to Phantom of the Opera. It opened here in Melbourne about a week ago and we are the second city in the world to host it. The Melbourne production went under a complete creative overhaul from the London production - new costumes, staging, costumes etc.

I really enjoyed the show. While by no means a "Phan" I had seen Phantom of the Opera, both on stage and on film, and enjoyed it. I know there were some quite mixed opinions from people in London, but I think if you look at it on it's own, not in comparison to Phantom or any expectations of what the show would or should be, you will see it's merits.

The staging was amazing. It really had that "Coney Island"/Carnival feel. The cast were all great, and the songs were very powerful.

I havent been posting much this ... year. I've gone to post an entry a few times, but I don't really know what to say. I'm not sure anyone really cares about my personal life anymore (and I genuinely do not mean that to come off as whiny so apologies if it has). And then I don't know what fandomy things to write about. So I thought I would make a post that includes a little bit of real life and a bit of fandom and see how I go.

RL:

Not much to report. Last month has been crazy with various "milestone" birthdays, which have now thankfully ceased and my weekends have become my own again. :O)

My younger sister is pregnant and is due on December 18 (Christmas baby! LOL) However yesterday she was told there was something out of the ordinary on her scan and is going to see a specialist who deals with the genetics side of things for more information. I never normally do this but can you please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

My flatmate has been driving me insane the last couple of months because she has essentially stopped doing any housework. When she first moved in it was an implied thing that Sunday mornings were housecleaning time. But then she just started not being around at that time (and not doing anything at other times). Then with the aforementioned birthday parties and things I was around on weekends even less and she still did nothing.
(The best example of this: it was my niece's 2nd birthday party on Sunday and since my sister is pregnant I was helping her out quite a lot - I did some baking at my parents house on Saturday, went to E's house before the party to help cook some more and clean up, then went home just to shower and change and went back to E's to help set up for the party, then after the party I stayed to help clean up. So I was essentially gone from about 9am to 6pm. When I got home, flatmate still hadnt done any cleaning, despite the fact that apart from attending said party she was home all weekend. So I started cleaning - 15 minutes later she came home, but ate her dinner and did her washing and cleaned her room - didnt help with any of the household cleaning.)
Last weekend on Sunday morning, after doing quite a lot of the cleaning, I left the house to meet some friends for lunch and as I left asked her to do the vacuuming. When I got home late that arvo you could barely tell she had done anything. The mud she had tracked into the house was gone, but you could still see a lot of crap on the floor. When I asked if she had cleaned she said, "yeah, not that you can tell huh" and then implied that because the new vacuum isn't as powerful as the old one that's why she did such a piss-poor job. I mean, yeah, I'll admit it, the new vaccum is not as powerful as the old one, and yet when I vacuum and put a bit of time and effort into it, it looks okay.
[/rant]

I am going to see Love Never Dies tonight. Possible report to follow tomorrow.

Fandom:

I'm loving Downton Abbey. I watched the first episode when it aired here a few weeks back and then downloaded the whole rest of the series and watched it in one day. Bates/Anna are my new OTP. They are so beautiful. Can't wait for season two.

I saw X-Men and did actually come out of it shipping Charles/Erik. James McAvoy has crazy chemistry with just about everyone he ever acts with, but this was something else. Have been perusing the kink meme and me likes it.

Luther has started up again. First ep was good but needed more Alice. And I love Luther and Mark being friends now. If you havent seen the first series I highly recommend it.

Um, I think that's all really. Drop me a line if you are still around and let me know whats happening on your end.

So I went to see the Melbourne production of Spring Awakening. The cast were predominately from the Young Australian Broadway Chorus so they were all in their teens. It was great to see a show about teenagers being played by teenagers and not twenty-somethings like usual.

The cast was very good. I wasn't too crazy about the actor playing Melchior, but the actors playing Wendla and Moritz were great. Though it was weird seeing the play with Australian accents. LOL

It's been a little while since I've updated.

Finally saw Star Trek!!! I loved it. Totally awesome. Has made me want to rewatch some Trek. Methinks I might do a Voyager rewatch - coz everyone flailing over the shippy has made me pine for my Trek OTP.

So, now we come to the real news. I AM FREAKING OUT. I am so stressed I can't even tell you. My part time study is due today and I'm not entirely confident that I will pass it. Because for the last month I have been investigating house things. Thats right, I might possibly perhaps maybe be building a house. So for the last month, I've been doing house things every weekend. And it is stressful. Seriously, I havent had a decent night sleep in two weeks. And so my study has suffered. Then I get into a pattern where when I am doing house stuff and stressing about my study and when I am studying I am still thinking about house things.

For better or for worse I have to hand my work in today. It's not as completed as I would have liked, but at least I am handing something in. I'm just hoping for the best. Obviously working at the place I am studying I know the teacher and am hoping he will go easy on me. Plus, some of the questions were really hospitality focused, when I am studying Tourism and have never worked or studied hospitality in my life. My original thoughts were worst case scenario, I fail, and then I have six weeks to resubmit. But then a coordinator said today that you can't resubmit flexible work. I JUST DONT KNOW. I know its too late to do anything about it now, but I am stressing so bad.

But when I am not thinking about study stuff I am stressing about the house stuff. This is seriously the most terrified I have ever been in my life. Because I am doing this all by myself and I have crap wages and its so expensive and it's freaking terrifying!

Ugh. I'm so exhausted.

In other, more happier news, I bought my ticket to Avenue Q today, and my younger sis will probably be giving birth next week.

***
TL;DR - Maybe buying a house + my study being due today (and not being confident that I will pass) = me being freaking stressed.

So my sister and I finally managed to have a weekend free in order to try for the Wicked lottery (for those not in the know, basically you turn up, put your name in a barrel and they draw out names to buy tickets in the front row for $30). And OMG we totally got tickets.

The whole day was awesome. The lottery was actually quite exciting. There was a young gay kid (probably no older than 17 - and his name turned out to be Barnaby) with a friend who also went in the lottery and during the half hour between putting your name in and having the draw, E and I decided to go to Starbucks a few shops away to kill time and they were there. We were totally laughing and joking with each other, trying to psych each other out, calling each other the competition etc. So funny.

When the lottery draw happened, my name was called out about 4th. There was another Rachel there with a similar sounding surname and she thought it was her and got all excited only to be shot down. So I went forward to get the tickets and Barnaby's reaction was awesome. The shock and 'annoyance' and what not. After all my details were sorted I told him that now we had tickets I was rooting for him.

The next name to come out of the draw was the other Rachel. And then the next person was Barnaby. The reaction of Barnaby and his friend was absolutely priceless. They began jumping and screaming and dancing around with excitement. Even the Wicked guy doing the lottery said he had never seen anything like it. LOL. So because we all got our names pulled out one after the other we were sitting together.

So, the show. We were sitting in front row centre. It was freaking awesome. The detail you see up that close is awesome. Because all us lottery people were sitting together we were all chatting beforehand, which was kinda fun. There was even someone from the lottery who wasnt sitting right with us but he came down the row to chat with us during intermission.

The understudy was on for Elphaba - she was good, had a good voice, but I think I prefer Amanda. I think there is just something more interesting about Amanda and she and Rob have amazing chemistry. Seeing an new Wizard of Oz after Rob was weird - and when he first came on stage for a split second I thought it was Rob coz they actually look quite similar in the face.

I definitely recommend giving the lottery a go. Obviously there is no guarantee, but if you do manage to get tickets its totally awesome.

On an unrealted note, work is totally sucking today and I think it will be like this for the next week or two. :O(

tattooedsiren: (wall-e)
I havent posted in a while, huh? So here is a quick update:

* Have been doing some study. I've been freaking out because the due dates are approaching and I feel like I should have done more work by now.

* Saw Wall-E. OMG so totally cute.

* Work is quiet coz its holidays and there are no students. Yay!

* Am falling a bit behind on my TV shows. I have decided to watch House on normal TV since its been fasttracked (alas that means no Spicks and Specks). Yay for Life being back. I missed the first ep of In Treatment but caught the second ep and taped the third ep last night. Project Runway US has just started airing. I actually downloaded and watched the first couple of eps when it started but since Aussie PR was on at the same time it got a bit disorientating so I stopped watching it. I still have to catch up on this weeks Gossip Girl, and all the Heroes and Greys Anatomy and Dexter eps. *flails* So much TV, so little time.

* I'm waiting every day for my order from Amazon of Gossip Girl S1 and Ugly Betty S2. Its not due for a few weeks but I really want them. *is impatient*

* Did any of my fellow DMB fans squee when one of their songs was used in House this week (or last week for my Americans)? :O)

* My nephew is growing up and is still gorgeous.

* I watched the original Funny Games. Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

* What did my Aussies think of Top Gear Australia? I thought it was a bit awkward but I suppose they need time to settle into everything. But please, for the love of God, get the UK boys out here and have a Oz vs UK challenge!!

* Have been feeling pretty average of late. Been a bit depressed I guess. But you dont wanna hear about that so moving right along...

* OMG Rob Guest! RIP. I'm so glad I got to see him on stage in Wicked this year. He will be sorely missed by the Aussie theatre world. Does anyone know if any shows will be cancelled? My sis and I were going to try for the Wicked lottery this weekend.

* Just over two months to my holiday. And every day I watch the American dollar go down. :O( Why didnt I do something (like pay off some accom or get some money out) when it was in the high 90s??? But on the plus side I bought a ticket to Shrek the Musical. Methinks it will either be awesome or suck - either way it will be worth seeing.

* Have not been inspired to do anything creative - no fics, icons, moodthemes, nothing. I miss the days when I was totally energetic and creative.

* I saw a guy on the train this morning who looked exactly like Burn Gorman. So weird.

* I really need more interesting bullet points. Anyone know where I can find some good ones???

I think thats about it. How is everyone out there in LJ land??

ETA: Channel 10 have axed 90210 from Oz screens. Man, another show to add to the download list.

So I got an email about tickets for Equus being available through broadway.com and there was flailing and squeeing on my flist about stage seats, so I thought I would buy a ticket to another show and try my luck. I went to the broadway.com website but there was no mention of stage seats, so I went to telecharge.com and looked for tickets there. I looked at stage seating, but for some reason it made me nervous, so I decided to see what other normal seats I would be able to get for the same performance, thinking it would be in the back half of the theatre like my seat for the first show I'm going to.

It wasn't. It was third row from the front, aisle seat.

I quickly snapped up the ticket, even though part of me is waiting for it to all be revealed as a massive mistake. I thought seats that close would be part of the premium $250 seating and I'm not paying that much. Then I thought I was reading the seating chart wrong, but in the description it stated third row from front.

Here are the details. Someone reassure me that I'm not dreaming and I actually did score awesome tickets:

Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 8:00 PM
1 Ticket, Center Orchestra Row A, Seat 101
Total Cost: $126.00

*flails*

I also bought a ticket to The Little Mermaid. :O) That brings the total of show bought for my NYC trip to four (2 x Equus, 1 x The Little Mermaid, 1 x Cirque du Soleil). I am intrigued by Shrek, and since its opening while I'm there I will have to buy in advance. Otherwise, unless something awesome comes up, I am going to buy all my other tickets while I'm there.

******

In other news, I seriously hurt my back yesterday. I had to leave work I was in so much pain. Chiro had a go at it so hopefully I will feel better soon - although the only other time I have had this problem, in Dec of last year, I'm convinced the only reason I got better was the week away from work, (ie sitting at my desk all day long) and not the multiple trips to the chiro.

As such, I probably wont be online much the next few days, so I obviously wont be checking my flist. I have a fic I want to post maybe tonight but apart from that it will only be very short stints at the computer (ie checking my email and thats it) so if you have something you want me to see please link me.

Oh, and I am about a third of the way through Breaking Dawn, so no spoliers about that thanks.
:O)

Hope everyone out there is doing well.

So I went and saw Wicked last night.

It was totally awesome.

We sat in the stalls, on the side, about nine rows from the front. It was just as funny and magical as I remembered. I even found myself getting emotional at the start because I knew what was coming.

The cast: Amanda and Lucy were really stunning. Amanda was so strong and funny and real. Lucy seemed to be losing her voice a bit as the night went on, and seemed to struggle a bit through the high notes in the opening songs. But apart from that she was great, really funny. Rob Mills. Ah, Rob. I have vented my frustration at his casting before so you all know how I feel about him. When I saw the 'Audience with Wicked' special on Foxtel a few weeks back and saw him sing a song with Amanda I was somewhat softened because I thought they sang really well together. His performance was okay, not great, but I didnt hate it. He really can't dance, and I could see him doing the "theatre face" a few times throughout the show, but I totally loved his song with Amanda. The rest of the cast was good.

Other stuff: The costumes still take my breath away. It was at the Regent, which is one of the biggest theatres we have, and it still wasnt big enough. The stage wasnt wide enough, and because of the way it was set up and the fact we were sitting on the side, sometimes it was hard to see stuff at the back of the stage on our side. I noticed a few small changes from the Broadway production, a lot of which were to do with the size of the stage.

Oh, and I totally went nuts with merchandise. I dont think I've ever spent that much on merhandise at a show. LOL.

To sum up, it was an amazing show and I highly recommend it to everyone in Melbourne (and Australia).

Thank God I have today off work. I feel bad for my poor sister who is the only one out of all of us who went last night who had to get up for work today.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!!

I really need to stop staring at this pic. But damn isnt it just the prettiest thing ever...

I've booked and paid for my flight. I bought my ticket to Equus. Holy crap I'm really going!!

tattooedsiren: (theatre broadway07)
I got tickets to Wicked! We're going Thursday 31 July. Yay!! Got fairly decent seats - row HH which is about ninth from the front but its way over on the side. Should be good though.

Had a bit of a busy weekend. Went to the movies and saw Jumper with my so-called best friends on Friday night (I think the less said about the evening the better). Went shopping with my mum and sisters all saturday. Went and saw Definitely Maybe with my sis on Saturday night. The movie was very cute, but I wanted to kill the three fourteen year olds who were talking and laughing the whole way through. Went to my sisters Sunday morning coz someone from my work was buying her spare bed. Then on Sunday arvo I spent pretty much all afternoon on the couch sneezing and napping. I dont know if it was my allergies playing up or if I'm starting to get a cold. Either way, not fun.

I was going to post my drabbles on the weekend but as you can see I didnt really have time. I'll post them today.

I've changed my LJ subtitle. Its actually from Wicked (Thank Goodness to be specific). I'm at work right now so I obviously cant upload it now but let me know if you want it and I'll upload it later. :O)

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Rob Mills is playing Fiyero in Wicked.

I'm completely shocked. There were rumours of Adam Garcia returning to the role as he was seen around town during audition times. Surely he would have been a better choice. Rob seems like such a smarmy git.

Also, Anthony Callea is playing Boq. This doesnt bother me as much because Boq is a smaller role and Anthony is from my hood. ;O) (Also, Anthony can actually sing - and he's short and playing a Munchkin LOL)

But seriously. Rob Mills as Fiyero? W.T.F.

And with that depressing thought I'm off to bed.

So I posted my little postcards while I was away, but I decided to post some holiday stories over the next month. I figure its the best way to tell you about my holiday in small snippets so you dont have to read one ridiculous long post. Plus its good for me so I can read these back in years to come. :O)

Story One: The Fangirl.

So, as you can imagine, I had a lot of fangirly moments while I was away. When I was in London we found the spot from the Rose episode of Doctor Who where Chris Eccleston is standing by the Thames with the London Eye like a halo around his head. We also went to Platform 9 3/4.

I saw lots of people I like and respect in various shows. Siobhan Donaghy (former Sugababe whose solo stuff I like) was Mimi in Rent. George Wendt (Norm from Cheers) played Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. Claire Danes was Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion (at one point I was standing about two steps away from her - she is shorter than me, has the tiniest wasit ever (though I'm sure the costume helped) and is just gorgeous). Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner were the leads in Cyrano de Bergerac (Kevin Kline is one of the best actors ever. Seriously, he was brilliant. Cannot say enough good things about him.)

But my ultimate fangirl night came when I saw Macbeth in London. Before going to the show I went to Waterstones, just near the theatre, in search of David Thewlis' new book. I pulled it off the shelf and what did I see - it was autographed by the author!!! Thats right, David Thewlis had signed my book. So, excited about that I went to the Gielgud, and found I was sitting in one the boxes. I was so close to the stage I could look the actors in the eyes!

So yeah, within the space of a few hours I bought something that David Thewlis had touched and signed, and then I saw Patrick Stewart on stage and actually made eye contact with him. My inner fangirl could not stop flailing. :O)

Oh, and for those of you wanting pics, they will be coming. There is a reason for the delay, which I will tell you when I post them, but I should be posting some by this weekend at the latest.
tattooedsiren: (janeeyre memory)
Just a shout out to my fellow Aussies - Jane Eyre is airing on Sunday night on the ABC at 8.30pm. So you can finally see why I went crazy with icons and mood themes and fic when I saw it. If you like costume dramas I definitely recommend that you check it out. And then it comes out on DVD next month - guess whos getting it for Christmas.

Also, I was browsing youtube and I came across this interview with Patrick Stewart for Macbeth. Basically, when I was in London, I asked my hotel about tickets and they said it was sold out until after I left. Later that day, I happened to go past the Gielgud Theatre where the play is showing and it didnt say anything about being sold out. So I tried my luck and went in and got the last available ticket for the next nights performance. So yeah, I totally saw Patrick Stewart in Macbeth. :O) I got one of the box seats, which meant I was literally about five steps away from him. At one point he looked me in the eyes, thats how close to the stage I was!! Anyway, I was browsing youtube and found this vid. Basically, where they are being interviewed is where I sat. How awesome is that!!

I checked out my flist until it got to about skip=200 and I cant be bothered going back any further than that. :O) So, once again, if there is anything you want me to see, link me.

tattooedsiren: (dan rupert emma)
So I finished reading Eclipse on the train this morning. Those books sure do suck you in. Knowing pretty much nothing else about them, can anyone fill me in on when the next one is expected, how many more there will be etc.

I missed Dan on Nova this morning. :O( They just replayed a bit of it though. Seems he was in top form as always. Was talking to my sis on Sunday about Dan being on Rove later that night and she turned to me and said "So when are we going to see December Boys?" So either she knows I will want to see and she would be the only one who would go with me, or I have finally got her sucked in to anything HP related, and she wants to see it just because of Dan. I think its the latter. *beams*

I havent updated everyone re: ticket purchasing in a bit. And yes, I have bought more tickets. No more concerts this time though - this time we are looking at theatre. Bought a ticket to see Pygmalion on Broadway, with Claire Danes. Also got a ticket to see Spamalot in January. I saw this show on Broadway a couple of years back (with Tim Curry FTW) and now they are bringing it to Melbourne I'm going with my parents and sister. Oh, and did I mention - front row!! :O)

I really wish my Muse would let me finish my [livejournal.com profile] 7spells series. All thats left is the smut and I havent been remotely inspired to write it lately. But I really want to get it finished and posted before I go on my holiday (in just over 5 weeks time). So, my dear readers, a poll...

[Poll #1053415]

Also, a big hello to everyone who has friended me of late. Nice to see you around. :O)

Anyway, better get back to it. Have a good one.

tattooedsiren: (alias)
I know with that is going on in fandom, not many people are likely to care about this post. No worries, move along, no hard feelings. But for those who want a respite from the madness or who wanted to hear about my night at the theatre, this is for you. :O)

So I went and saw Phantom of the Opera last night. I had never seen it on stage, only the movie.

It was so awesome.

Bad new first - Anthony Warlow was still sick so we had the understudy phantom. For those of you not in Oz, Warlow is the Australian Phantom. I was disappointed - but at least I didnt moan and groan like the rest of the audience when it was announced. Feel so bad for the understudy - he must get that every time.

And now for the good - it was so awesome. The stage and sets were mindblowing, the way they used the theatre was genius, the cast was awesome. Understudy!Phantom was great - though he did seem to struggle once or twice while singing. Maybe he just wasnt prepared to be performing every day of opening week. Christine - her voice was so amazing. She is so tiny! Everyone was really great.

I'm so glad I went and saw it. And my brother-in-law and I are planning on going back, as is most of the audience last night, coz we want to see Warlow.

If you've seen it and want to chat, feel free to comment. :O)

Other news:

*hugs fandom*

I do have one stupid question about moving to another journal with all the deletions and what not. Wont most other journals have the same policies and as such what is to stop the same thing happening there??

Should I be concerned about my header? I dont think its too explicit or anything, but the whole fuzzy line for if a character drawn is underage or not, plus the fact it was drawn by Ponderosa, makes me a bit anxious.

Will hopefully be seeing The Simpsons Movie today.

tattooedsiren: (trio dhdragon)
I got tickets to The Police!!!

They are playing the MCG on Australia Day next year. Not too sure about the MCG as the venue but what can you do. Our seats are right on the side, so I reckon they will either be really good or really crappy - probably the latter since we paid for the cheapest ticket. But who cares!! I'll be there and hear them and I'm sure there will be screens and it will be all good.

During my LJ hiatus I also got a ticket to see Brooke Fraser in concert. The best part - it only cost $35!! Seriously, I think that's the cheapest concert ticket I've ever bought.

Read in the paper today that Elton John is touring Oz in December. Wouldnt mind going - especially to his Werribee Mansion concert, since thats in my neighbourhood. :O)

Going to The Phantom of the Opera on Friday. Can't wait. Does anyone want a review on the weekend or not really??

I think thats all from me re: music and theatre. LOL.

Hope everyone is well. Feel free to comment and tell me what you've been up to. :O)
