For
hermionesmum, who asked that the drabble be neither angsty nor fluffy, but real. I hope I have succeeded. I think I have.
Laughter
Love. Laughter. Strength of character.
Ask Remus Lupin what keeps him and Hermione together and that will be his answer.
It isn’t easy. They love each other, more than anyone in the world, but, contrary to popular belief, love is not all you need.
So they fight. They fight against those who think they shouldn’t be together. They defy the expectations of those around them. But more than that, they fight for each other.
As much as they wish it wasn’t the case, they would be lying if they said the age difference and their former student/teacher relationship and his werewolf status didn’t cause problems between them. Of course they do. But that doesn’t mean that they give up. They fight for what they want. They fight for each other. Strength of character.
And laughter, laughter is as essential to them as oxygen. They can make each other laugh more than anyone else. They laugh every day. It is simple and joyous and important.
They love each other. They respect and adore each other. They love with their whole hearts and bodies and minds and souls.
Love. Laughter. Strength of character.

A Moment in Time
It’s just one moment, but it changes their lives.
No one could possibly understand what they were going through. Of course everyone felt the loss of Harry, even total strangers felt it, but no one felt it the same as Remus and Hermione.
For Remus it was the loss of innocence, the loss of goodness, the loss of the one good thing he still had from his past. For Hermione, it was the loss of her best friend, her brother, her favourite person in the whole world.
It got a little easier each day. Remus began talking again after a week. Hermione stopped spending the entire day crying after a week and a half. Remus began eating again after a fortnight. Hermione allowed others to touch her after three weeks.
But they never entirely recover.
It took months before they had any semblance of normalcy. They could function properly, at least on the outside, even if on the inside their hearts were still broken.
Remus found Hermione in the library one evening, her head in her hands, crying. He shut his eyes briefly, so saddened and overwhelmed by the sight before him.
He sat silently beside her, instantly wrapping an arm around her. She eagerly went into his warm embrace, soothed by the rhythmic beating of his heart.
Hermione eventually stopped crying, sheepishly pulling out of Remus’ arms. He smiled reassuringly at her, gently wiping away her tears. She looked up into his eyes and something inside her changed.
Before she knew what she was doing, Hermione leaned forward and gently pressed her lips to his. He didn’t kiss her back. She pulled back from him, looking at him with stubborn eyes, before once again pressing her lips to his. This time, he kissed her back.
Despite the gentleness of their first kiss, things between them soon became desperate and heated and urgent. They didn’t even make it from the library, making love right there on the floor.
When Hermione awoke the next morning, he wasn’t beside her. His loss was like a punch to the stomach, until he returned five minutes later with breakfast, a shy grin on his face, and she smiled her first genuine smile in months.
It was just one moment in time but in that one moment everything changed. There was peace and love in their lives for the first time in too long.
And less than a year later, Harry John Lupin was born.
