You know, I can absolutely imagine my life without her. I can envision days waking up alone, dinners without her conversation and stubborn arguing, full moons without her face being the last thing I see before the beast takes over.
I can envisage my life without her, because I had to live forty years without her. Days, months, even years when I would sleepwalk though life. Half a lifetime of waiting, waiting for her.
I didn’t even know what I was missing until I met her. But she was a child, and although my feelings for her then extended only to being curious about the friend of my friend's son, I still knew, even then, she was someone who would be important to me.
It was when I saw her for the first time in a year that I suddenly realised. She had been travelling, seeing the world in all its glory, and the woman who returned was so similar yet so different to the girl who left. Seeing her then, her smile and her bright eyes and her hand in mine and her lips on my cheek, I knew.
It shouldn’t have happened as easily as it did. There should have been more angst, more uncertainty. God knows there are enough issues to list about why we shouldn’t work. But in spite of all those reasons, or perhaps even because of it, we fell in love.
I know how lucky I am to have her. But I also know how easily it could all fall apart. I am not so lovesick to think everything will be perfect for forever. But there is nothing I can do about the future. And so, every morning, I tell her I love her. Sometimes it’s a simple “I love you, Hermione.” Sometimes I elaborate, telling her how amazing she is and why I love her and that she has made my life better. I need to her to know that, whatever the day may bring, whether it’s the first day of the rest of our lives together or our last day on this earth, I love her with all my heart.
But the best bit is that she always replies with, “I love you too, Remus.”
