For
lady_game. This is my first attempt at even writing Neville or Luna, let alone in a shippy context, but I hope you like it.
Frozen Moonlight
He felt their absence acutely. Of course he still had Seamus and Dean, but it just wasn’t the same at Hogwarts without Harry, Ron and Hermione. He didn’t know why they didn’t come back; in their letter all they said was that they had something important to do, something that couldn’t wait, and they hoped to see him soon.
It was so quiet at Hogwarts. They weren’t the only students not to return. But Neville didn’t mind the silence and solitude. He was used to it, and it was strangely comforting.
He wandered down to the greenhouses, splashing in the melting snow. He pulled his cloak tight around him, visibly exhaling into the cool night air. The greenhouse was warm and stuffy, and he felt like he was home. He checked on his plants for a bit, watering and tending those that needed it. But when he was done, he wasn’t quite ready to return to the castle. So instead of heading back inside, he strolled out to the lake.
The moon was bright and he walked around the grounds with surprising ease. They really weren’t supposed to be out this late, but he couldn’t find the will to care. The effect of his absent friends, he supposed with a smile.
He was surprised to see the shape of someone sitting by the lake. Instinct made him reach for his wand, which he gripped tightly as he moved closer, but he released it when he realised it was Luna.
“You’re not supposed to be out here,” he said as he approached.
“Neither are you,” she replied without turning around.
He slowly came and sat beside her. She looked at him, her big round eyes boring into his, and she took his hand.
Neville’s eyes widened in shock and he went to say something, but Luna shook her head, smiling at him. Then she turned her attention back to the lake, and Neville didn’t know what to do other than follow her lead. So he simply sat there, holding her hand in silence, bathed in frozen moonlight.
